June 7, 201115 yr Hi, I am wanting to re-design my current HTML/CSS website which is held in the root of the server. I want to use Wordpress this time around. How would i go about redesigning the site without taking the current html/css version off in order to install the wordpress setup in the root also? I have tried to install Wordpress in the root on top of the html/css site but it throws back errors saying it cant install. My plan was to just switch over to the Wordpress version once completed the archive the html/css site. Is there another or better way of doing this. At the moment i am thinking of just archiving my current site and have the Wordpress theme live and work on it as i go and try to get it done super fast so it does look a mess? Any ideas?
June 7, 201115 yr Do the wordpress theme on your local computer and then do the change over after it is created.
June 7, 201115 yr Set your current site up in a subfolder, use htaccess to point your domain there. Build your wordpress site in a different subfolder, set up a subdomain to point there (testing.yourdomain.com, etc.) Once you are ready to launch just make your primary domain point to the Wordpress subdomain. Or do the development work locally and migrate it when you are finished, that's a much easier way.
June 8, 201115 yr Definitely try and do it locally first. I have tried doing things in sub directories, and in my experience the nightmare of switching over all the links is not worth it. Download MAMP if you're Mac or WAMP if you're Windows and install WP, then code away... WAMP: http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php MAMP: http://www.mamp.info/en/downloads/index.html If you're struggling setting up a local installation of WP, there are lots of video on Youtube of people giving step by step tutorials...
