Looking for a bit of feedback on a site redesign I'm working on. This is probably one of my most adventurous projects to date as I'm trying to break out of my usual mold. Mainly because of looking at other peoples work on here, its a great source of inspiration!

 

Usually my websites have a very predictable layout, white background divs to hold content with a gradient here and there if I'm feeling brave but this time I'm trying to use some of the more modern techniques. But that said I'm also struggling to put them into play. So that said please have a look and let me know what you think.. this is totally conceptual so the images i've used are just the first things I found in iStock..

 

I'm really not happy with the top header yet but I did want to feature a search box.. it will have a little icon in there eventually but I think the phone number looks out of place and makes that area look cluttered.

I would not be afraid of a bit smaller content font.

I like your site much more, when I make the whole thing 10-15% smaller.

I like the colors. I think however, that you have too many shadow-like backgrounds, like under these 3 columns.

I like the website but if it is the front page, I'd recommend to use less text. but generally I like it.

Agree the smaller font does look better, Not sure about less text though. One thing I'm really trying not to do is produce a site for lawyers which have the typical stock photo's on there.. a man with a big cheesy grin for instance where the photo's are there in place of content.

 

But on the other hand your comment has given me something to think about.. Will it be good or bad for the search rankings if there's less content on the home page and I move some text to the other pages..

 

With smaller text it does look better:

Second one with the smaller text is less readable. Either go back to the larger (which is more proportional to the overall scale of the design) or increase the leading to compensate.

Well I'm getting there into making it a reality. Must say I love the 960 grid system, I've only just used it for the first time on this project and boy does it make things easier!!

The image/slider for the moment is just a placeholder image so thats not functional but the rest is HTML & CSS.

 

And the vertical seperators between the 'cells' are just there to show concept at the moment, as I havent gotten to that bit yet, not quite certain how I'll do that.. that being having a subtle vertical gradient.. I think a css 'background' will happily do the job but for now I need a break.. it's starting to send me googly eyed..
