It will take 3 to 6 months to get the content ready so should I purchase a domain name now and stick a page up just to get it indexed or should I wait and launch the whole site when it's finished?

Buy the domain then do whatever you like

I always advise my clients to purchase the domain name straight away...

 

Just incase someone gets it before them! Even if you think it's a unique one, that NO ONE ELSE will think of... chances are, someone will! LOL

 

Get the domain, then sort out hosting ... you can then play till your hearts content

As others have said, it's advisable to purchase the domain asap for a number of reasons. You can always put up a holding page until the site is ready to launch, which is good from a usability point of view and also for Google indexing.

With my clients now, her's what I get them to do:

 

1. 
    
   
2. Register the domain, so nobody else gets it and so you can start ageing it.
   
3. Setup a hosting account that will allow you good control and has good live support.
   
4. Create a simple powerpoint prestation all about your business.
   
5. Convert the presentation to a .swf file or .pdf.
   
6. Create a web video using something like jplayer or something.
   
7. Create a simple web page with header, two or three columns and a footer.
   
8. Design yourself a basic header with company name and contact details.
   
9. Design yourself a footer, including your company name and your industry key words etc.
   
10. Place your video player in the middle column.
    
11. Use the side columns to write some short paragraphs explaining the temporary nature of the site and also listing your products and services using many of your key search terms (don't forget a few of the long tail search terms).
    
12. Style it so it looks right.
    
13. Upload it and away you go.
    

 

Where i've used this approach with customers (especially niche customers) it's helped to get them ranking well enough as a starting point for SEO. For some of my specialist niche customers, it's taken them onto a page one listing for many of their key terms used.
