I am new to web design and have been asked to build a website for a friend. She has given me this as an example http://www.harvestatjimmys.com/ i was wondering how it is possible to get the shadow around the mainbody and whether this is a css layout?

Yes its an HTML / CSS website. for the side shadows you will have to crop a horizontal image of 1px height and set it as background of main wrapper. here are some more examples of css designs
