When I view a WP site, if I click to view source, I can see some HTML, and in particular, divs, I need to add a div, but amnot sure where I would find the HTML within the many files....is there a simple answer to this?

depending on the theme, but normally in header.php or index.php but could be in any file tbh

check here you'll see which pages using which template file , usually for homepage it's index.php or home.php
