September 19, 201016 yr Hello I am a complete novice when it comes to web design but am in need of creating a site, the site is going to be for a art competition which requires the users to register to the site ,upload a jped of their drawing at 50p per upload. The drawing is then displayed in a picture gallery among other entries for which users can vote for the best one. The winner will then have their drawing printed on a high quality canvas. Now I am interested in learning to code myself (got my website for dummies book )) but is there some kind of wizard or site maker I can use to do it that will meet my requirements? Thanks for the help in advance
September 19, 201016 yr There are lots of site makers out there that will build through a series of simple steps your website but you will have to use there pre set templates. I dont know if you can do what you are planning on doing through them though.
September 19, 201016 yr Creating a site is one thing - adding functionality to allow people to register/login and upload files is another. What's your timescale and what do you know about webdesign and development so far?
September 19, 201016 yr I think 'complete novice' maybe a clue MrsM lol You've also got to think about payments and voting systems. If you google there used to be some image voting scripts out there that do much of the backend work for you. I'm guessing you're hoping to make money out of it? Remember to do your costings....hosting costs, any software costs, prize costs against the 50p's that you're going to take. Probably will want some legal documents to cover what happens if only, say, 3 people upload their images for voting and then one of them is the winner. You could then have to fork out for canvas printing at a loss.

September 19, 201016 yr Author Thanks for the replies. No real profit is looking to be made, it actually for the opening of a small local gallery, which the winner gets their picture placed on display, as well as their own smaller personal print. Its mainly just for drumming up interest. I've had a look at some of the free site builders and they do pretty much what I am looking for but they do not have any kind of voting system option. As for payment, I was thinking of something like a redirecting system where they pay through paypal, though there are additional fees for that. The 50p price was a rough estimate, a £1 is probably the figure that will be asked for once everything is factored. As for time scale there is roughly over week before it needed to be up and running.
September 19, 201016 yr a cheeky option could be to use Facebook. Setup a Page or Group. get them to send you the images and payment. You upload them and then voting is done by using Facebook 'likes'. I've seen this used for other voting competitions before. If it's a Page....and you'd have to test whether you can Like photos on pages, you can also set up your own page Tabs using FBML and then direct your domain to the Page as well.

That's a great idea considering the short timescale. I wouldn't take a project like that on with a week to go. Sounds like it's going to be a short-lived site too so probably not worth too much time.
