August 31, 201016 yr Hi, just a quick question - is ASP, ASP.NET and .NET all the same thing or are they different, if so, how are they different? Thanks ASP is an old technology and is a server side interpreted procedural scripting engine commonly used with the VBscript language. .NET is a framework with a large library of components (data access, desktop UI, web, system etc) It is fully object oriented, runs compiled (in an intermediate language) against a virtual machine (that does machine specific compilation/optimisation). Common languages that can be used to program .NET are C# and VB.NET ASP.NET is the Web application framework part of the .NET library. A useful link comparing ASP.NET to ASP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASP.NET#ASP.NET_compared_with_ASP_classic Cheers, Nick.
August 31, 201016 yr ASP is the original web scripting language from Microsoft, release around 1995. .net is a platform / virtual machine environment that runs byte code, I think originally positioned against java. ASP.net is the web scripting language & environment that replaces ASP, and makes use of the .net platform.

ASP.net is the web scripting language & environment that replaces ASP, and makes use of the .net platform. ASP is not a language. It is a small framework or series of components. VBScript is a common language used to write ASP. jscript was less popularly used. ASP.net is not a language and it is not scripting. ASP.net is one of the components of the .NET framework. C# and VB.net are two common languages used to program ASP.net and they are always compiled, never scripted. Cheers, Nick.
