I was wondering if it would be better/easier to use a hosted cms such as Cushy CMS or to use CMSMS for example, for clients site?

 

Of course the cost of CMSMS is free and would need to be uploaded to each clients hosting account.

Whereas Cushy CMS (or similiar) charges a monthly fee.

 

Which method do you prefer/use?

it really depends on what you want the CMS to do. As I understand it, hosted CMS (barring Squarespace) don't offer blogging style functionality, you can edit page portions, but you don't create an archive of data. Personally, I'm wary of hosted options that don't come from someone like Amazon/Google - if the provider dies, so do all of your sites.

I wanted something that could, if needed, create a new page aswell as just being able to edit...

CMSMS has a news module which does pretty much the same thing as a blog. I would definitely recommend getting into it - its what we use at work and it seems endless in its flexibility. Cushy CMS should only really be used for really, really simple projects that don't require you to add pages etc.

CMSMS is something I need to play around with asap..!

 

With CushyCMS all I need to do is add the special tags to define which areas are editable...How does this work with CMSMS??

 

Also, can I brand it so it has my/clients logo??

There's a wide variation in capabilities among hosted CMS systems. CushyCMS is one of the simplest -- it isn't even really a CMS, just a method for editing regions of pages that are hosted elsewhere.

 

LightCMS is a true CMS that is fully hosted.

 

Webvanta (www.webvanta.com) is one that I am involved with, and which I believe is the most capable hosted CMS available -- the only one, in fact, that makes it easy to create fully custom, database-driven sites.

 

A hosted CMS is a tradeoff -- you do have to accept some dependency on the vendor (though export and escrow options can mitigate the risk), and you don't have quite as much control as with a self-hosted system. In return, you can get started quickly, you can get support when you need it, and you don't have to worry about security, backups, or server admin.

Never really understood it when people say this. A CMS is a 'Content Management System', and as CushyCMS lets you 'manage' the 'content' albeit in a much more restricted way it surely is a 'system' for 'managing content' and thusly is a 'Content Management System', or also thusly: a CMS.
