Advice on going about something like this.

Hey guys I just got a great opportunity to make some cash from a friend of mine, he wants a site very similar to this with the music players and all, http://www.thefreshbeat.com/index.php.

Now by the tag at the end of index I realize this is a PHP type website, I have not much experience with php besides an e-mail form, I do however know my way around html and css.

How can I go about doing a website similar to the one linked above? I think this is a great opportunity for myself to learn while making some money. I have searched the net a lot fro answers but I mostly keep getting sent to word press and other free blogging websites.

Thanks a lot for any insight.

That site uses Joomla, so you could duplicate that. I personally find Wordpress easier to customise than Joomla, so I'd personally recommend using WP over Joomla.

Using one of these frameworks will cut down your workload an unimaginable amount. You just need some plugins, patience and some design work.

Wow thanks a lot for the reply very helpful, I had read up on wordpress Howell I do not like the fact that there brand will be plastered all over the site. Unless there is a certain way to work with wordpress to avoid that.

Thanks again and I will be reading up on joomla to see how best to proceed.

EDIT: also was your site created with joomla ? or Wordpress? And do you know any handy tutorials of either ?

My site is powered by Wordpress - all of it. Wordpress need not be mentioned anywhere on your site - it's open source - though I tend to credit them in the footer.

You can theme Wordpress yourself, or there's thousands of themes you can download and get going with right away.

Here's a 'handy tutorial' for theming WP (contents of the tutorial at bottom of post).
