I am in the process of designing my blog, which will be all about the technical music aspects of musical theatre (musical direction, keyboard programming, orchestration, track production etc.)

 

The website is called ModeratoMaestoso.com (Moderato Maestoso being the first tempo marking in the Les Misérables score - my favourite of the shows I've done ), and I am looking for a typeface for the masthead.

 

Are there any unclichéd theatrical fonts around? "Broadway" is now so passé, as is (although less so) Bodoni. The design is cleanly-grungy(!) - grunge with plenty of white space, so a grunge-style (worn/destroyed) font would be quite good (although that could be done after the fact, the font itself doesn't need to be grunge). The nav menu is in "3rd Man", which I think looks awesome, but less so for headings.

 

Commercial font ideas please - I don't want to have to get into licensing issues with non-commercial (freeware) fonts. It's a commercial site.

 

Any ideas much appreciated!

Have you considered using a simple cursive italic font to mimic the actual tempo marking on the score?

The typeface doesn't necessarily have to drive home the theatrical message if it is clearly present everywhere else in your composition.

Thanks for that idea! I had thought about it, but any tests that I had done looked a bit "lightweight".

 

Although you have given me an idea... The tagline for the site is "All About The Music", which is a logo based on various sizes of Hoefler and Frere-Jones' "Tungsten" and layered / messed around with. Putting *that* as the site heading and then "moderatomaestoso.com" underneath in a cursive italic looks pretty good.

 

Time to mess around some more! This is jusy one of the many reasons why I could never do this professionally - I enjoy fiddling too much!
