April 19, 201016 yr Hi All, I was just wondering how diversely skilled you were before getting your first permanent employment as a web developer. I see many adverts with 'Junior' or even 'Trainee' in the title but further reading reveals they are after someone who knows Javascript, PHP, ASP, MYSQL with a few years experience. Hardly what I'd expect a Junior to already know. I am self-taught in (x)html, css and some javascript and jquery. I want to get better and feel employment would be best but it doesn't look possible. Is a little freelancing ideal? Thanks. Brad.
April 19, 201016 yr I had exactly the same thoughts myself and started to despair after getting no replies from the millions of jobs I was applying for. In the end I created a portfolio (so yes, a bit of freelancing will help here) making sure everything is coded to the best of your ability, and approach design agents directly. In the end I sent my CV and a link to my portfolio to about the first 30 hits in google for "bournemouth web design" and ended up getting 2 interviews, one of which landed me a job! I do not have much experience past HTML CSS and a small amount of Javascript, and they seemed more than happy with this. I am starting next week and getting a bit nervous!
