I would try the darker red you use on the titles for your footer and loose the stroke round recent work, see how that looks

Very nice for a first design.

 

Also, if you're just starting web design / development, start learning html and css and see what you prefer to do, the coding or the designing. I started designing first, but now I know HTML and CSS, I've started to learn PHP and I prefer to code rather than design. It's much more interesting. :)

Try to use space more effectively, that huge gap on your house banner graphic I'm not too keen on.
