When I type my desired domain it just takes me to a standard page saying: 'It may be unavailable or may not exist. Try using the suggestions or related links below, or search again using our web search.'

 

How do I go about getting that domain? How do I know if someone owns it? If no one does, how can I make it my own?

 

If I buy a domain is that then mine until I sell it on or do I have to keep paying a yearly fee for it?

 

Quite new to all the domain and hosting side of things, as you can tell...

Im pretty sure, you can buy it at the standard price, try 1and1.co.uk see if you can get it..

You can get domain information using a whois lookup. Google whois and you will find a bunch of search like tools. I use this site. A taken domain result looks like this, and an available domain looks like this.

 

Once you've found a domain that you like, and it's available on the whois lookup, you could either purchase just the domain, or most hosting providers allow you to purchase a domain with them.

 

I use hostmonster. They give you a free domain name for using their service. You could also buy extra domains, and assign them to certain folders on your host, so you could host as many websites as you'd like, on one server!

MyshMash.co.uk is available for 6 pound for 2 years, pretty good I think.

 

You think that name is a bit too abstract though? Maybe for a business but as a personal- portfolio-and-general-stuff-website it should be ok yeah?

First rule: Never discuss unregistered domains on the internet. Someone might register it before you

 

I think it's pretty good. You may want to register mishmash aswell, for spelling problems.

I think I've found a better name now anyways

But apart from that, would it be better to use example.co.uk or exampledesign.co.uk for a portfolio website? Or example-design even?

How important is the name of a portfolio website? As far as being catchy and easy to remember goes? Or is it better to optimise for SE's for portfolio sites?
