December 10, 200916 yr Can anyone recommend a good php book for beginers that maybe teaches you step by step and gets you creating apps or programmes? I'm a complete beginner here so something simple step by step would be good.
December 10, 200916 yr I have started working through the free online chapters of this book: http://www.sitepoint.com/books/phpmysql4/?historicredirect=phpmysql1 which has been really useful so far, so I have ordered the book. I will let you know how I get on! These tutorials are also good http://www.phpvideotutorials.com/free although go through the old videos, not the new ones because the new ones wate so much time with nonsense! Hope this helps, I'm learning too!
December 10, 200916 yr Hi Lee, When I started xx years ago I used Sams "Teach yourself PHP 4 in 24 Hours" . I think they got the title wrong - should have been 24 Years . Good luck. PS. Go to PHP Site . There are basic tutorials and links to other sites for learning PHP.
December 10, 200916 yr I've always been a practical learner, and so I found Practical PHP and MySQL really good. It got me going, and after a few chapters I started trying to write my own scripts and using that as a reference only.

December 24, 200916 yr Author I've gone with this book which came today so looking to get stuck in over xmas!
December 26, 200916 yr In case you don't get on with that book or anyone else is looking, this is the one I've been learning from. PHP visual quick pro I've found this to really suit the way I like to learn. And thats with plenty of hands on practical tutorials and straight forward explanations. It's clearly broken down in to sections and doesn't complicate things with too much talk. Being PHP, it's assumed you have a knowledge and understanding of HTML and how web pages are constructed. There's also some tutorials at the end of the book that take all what you've learnt to create something in common usage (an e-commerce site being one).

I read the HTML & CSS one from the Visual Quickstart Guides which I thought was really helpful so hopefully this one will be too.
