ASP.NET Extract first paragraph from a mysql database and show in gridview

Featured Replies

Hello Guys,

Quick question, I have a gridview which connects to a mysql database, gridview shows news headlines which are hyperlinked, the hyperlinked news headline takes you to a new page which displays the full news article...

My question is this:

I am wanting to show the first paragraph of the actual news article on the main page to give a brief view of what the articles about, I have no idea how to do this though...

Any ideas guys?

Marc

Is it plain text or HTML code ?

One way to do it:

Dim myLength As Integer = 300

Public Function GetParagraphByCharacters(myNews)
   Dim sParagraph As String = ""

   sParagraph = Mid(myNews, 1, myLength) -- Get first 300 characters of myNews string.
   sParagraph = Mid(sParagraph, 1, InStrRev(sParagraph, " ")) -- Remove characters after last "space".
   sParagraph += " ..." -- Add 3 dots :]

   Return sParagraph

End Function

Or

Public Function GetParagraphByNewLine(myNews)
   Dim sParagraph As String = ""

   sParagraph = Mid(myNews, 1, InStrRev(myNews, System.Environment.NewLine) - 1)

   Return sParagraph

End Function

Hope this is what you're looking for.

Peter
