I'm due to be creating a documentary as part of a Uni project. I've decided to do it on Manchester's growing creative industry and the industry in general. I could really do with a bit of help and advice. I have a few ideas of people to potentially interview (freelancers, agency owners etc) but am stuck when it comes to thinking of the 'story' I'll tell.

 

I was thinking of talking about how the industry has grown and evolved, the opportunities available, what it's like to be a freelancer opposed to working for an agency etc. However, I keep wondering if I could provide enough substance (it has to last 20 minutes) and if it'd even be of interest. I was told to try and make it fast, edgy, funny and informative.

 

Any ideas? I'd really appreciate it.

I made a documentary last year we found that telling 2 stories at once side by side is a good thing to do. one about the subject and one about the making of the documentary. You can check out mine at WATCH THE DOC HERE Hopefully it will give you an idea. Try and have fun with it too we didn't set out to make a humorous documentary and also remember you can't plan everything ! When it's a documentary roll the cameras at all given chances you can't have too much footage .

 

Use an original soundtrack (then you might get featured or have your work shown on television"

 

Aim it at an audience and don't be too broad, Narrow down your subject
