Hello!

I was just wondering, do people applying for web design/development companies look for university graduates? ore is a good portfolio all that is needed?

They do look for experience within the industries has been my exerience and although I have tried to get more experience I have not succeeded just yet.

Other people may have different experiences though

In my opinion

A great portfolio would be very much an advantaged over qualifications, I find life experience & self-learning much more important & easier in this trade, I'm self taught & earn 36k a year working for a Digital Agency, there is no reason why you can't if you put your mind to it, this is the first agency I have worked for but have been freelance previously for two years, something I experienced when being freelance on three occasions was some of my clients before coming to me had been to company set up from people straight out of university, the sites were terrible and they could not make a simple php contact form...

Further into my investigation I found out they are still teaching stuff from back in the 90's, designing with tables etc, nothing to do with CMS etc I currently know someone studying there..

I feel sorry for the guy, they are teaching him how to make a JavaScript calculator at the moment without even an insight into html or css first, and in my opinion everyone should concur CSS, XHTML & Photoshop first then take on the world.

Thanks for that, I currently am proficient with HTML, CSS and PHP. I don't think I will go to uni, but rather build a solid portfolio. I would love to volunteer at a web design company to gain experience, but I have none near me. So should I do freelancing to gain commercial experience ?

Where do you live? I would give freelancing a shot, do you have a portfolio all ready?
