How should I go about this?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm new here and found this site using google as I would like to run an online football game where players across the UK (or world) run virtual teams in competition with each other and which is mostly automated, with some moderation from myself.

If you take a look at www.einnek1.co.uk, you will get the idea of what I am interested in doing. This is just one example, there are many others. I don't intend it to be my main income, more a hobby with some profits eventually.

In essence, once a week, the managers will select their teams, complete transfer deals and watch as the computer generates results between the various sides, league tables calculated, squads updated automatically as events happen, me as the moderator being allowed to make events happen, etc etc - I could providea full spec if required, but at this stage, just would like to know:-

1. How best to go about this?

2. What type of business I need to contact to do it for me i.e. programmers, web designers etc? (It will be fully web-based with nothing going onto people's computers).

3. What might I expect to pay?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Mark.

Hi Mark,

If you can provide a full specification, it would be good.

The big one for me would be how the game scores are calculated, and then how are they input? if it is all automatic, compared to you doing it, then obviously this adds alot more to it.

If you are looking for someone to do this, i would recommend that you find someone with experience of working on the larger projects (alot of php guys are really good, but some are only experienced in installing ecommerce and modifying code slightly - and this is likely to need a custom write)

You will want to be looking for someone that has both PHP experience, as well as possibly alot of database integration experience (but again, this relies on the specification). If you are intending to include good graphics, you then want to bring in a graphic designer and possibly a flash specialist if you want movies added. For these reasons, you may actually be better approaching a team rather than a single person, or you could get a group of individuals and try to run it yourself, it all depends on how confident you are about running a project like this.

I couldnt begin to quote (and would be cautious of anyone who does at this point) without seeing the rest of the specification. Do you have a budget in mind?

Hope this has helped a little bit.

Does the software already exist? i.e are you paying some sort of license fee to use it or does it need to be created? If not, sounds like you need to be approaching a full on software / application development studio. If your simply integrating something your paying to use, then a studio or even a competent freelancer can do the job for you dependent on how easy the software is to get up and running.

Hi,

Thanks for both of your replies.

Subject to some rules and calculations I would supply, I would want to be able to press a button once everyone has submitted their teams and for it to calculate the results and scorers etc etc.

The software for what I want would have to be written as there is no known obtainable source code that I know of - the code on the website I mentioned is already used by another game.

Mark.
