301 permanent redirect ( i have done one I have)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have recently set up a 301 permanent redirect on a parked domain i have to point to a page on our web site (dont be fooled it sounds from the above sentance that i know what im doing but i dont)and my question is how does google know that this domainn exists.

Is google sent some kind of notification that this domain is now in circulation and has an active web page attached to it.

Cheers

James

Hi James,

Which domain are you specifically referring to when you ask whether Google knows of its existence?

Let's say Domain A has the 301 redirect set up to Domain B.

Chances are Google has already found Domain B because it has a website attached to it. Google continually sends our crawlers (also known as robots, spiders, Googlebot...) to find and index websites. So it's a pretty safe bet that unless your website is quite new, Google already knows about it.

If you're talking about Domain A, then there is a chance Google has never heard of it. If there is no website to crawl, and no one is linking to Domain A, then it's probably under the radar.

Does that answer your question?

Hi Darren,

Thanks for your help.....

I have a web site called www.omega-completion.com which has a page on it under the intervention drop down menu called "downhole memory camera".

I purchased a domain called www.downholecamera.net and set up a 301 re-direct to the camera page on our main site (mentioned above).

What i cant work out is whether or not google will find www.downholecamera.net or do i have to submit it to google.

Maybe i just need to put a link to www.downholecamera.net on my site.

Should i modify the drop down menu link to the camera page to point to www.downholecamera.net

Thanks again for your help, its greatly appreciated.

Hi James,

OK, I understand where you're coming from.

Unless Google finds the domain www.downholecamera.net either by finding a link on the net to that site or by you submitting it, then the domain will just be under the radar of Google. You can submit the domain name to Google (right here http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl) and Google will come crawling at some point. After it follows your 301 Redirect to the camera page, it will likely just associate that page's content with the domain name.

So yes, the short answer is Google will need to be told the domain exists if you want it to appear in the search results and go to the camera page.

Slight problem,

Whenever i try and add http://www.downholecamera.net/ to google it says it does not exist.

Eeek, totally stumped

Hmm, maybe we've understimated Google. They might be able to detect that there is no website behind the domain name, it's just a redirect to somewhere else. Now that you've said that, it makes sense they wouldn't accept it. Short of using black hat SEO techniques (which are wrong, obviously) I can't think of any way around this... maybe someone else here has an idea?

I maybe just need to bite the bullet and get some basic web hosting space for the domain and put some content on it.

Thanks anyway

It seems to be working fine now , submitted without a problem this morning.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Darren.
