Confused about wordpress.com and wordpress.org

Featured Replies

Hello friends,

1.When some one talks of wordpress do they talk of wordpress.com or .org ?

2.What is the basic differnce between the two?

3.Which one more popular and convinient to use?

4.With cpanel fantastico i get wordpress to insall if i do it will i be able to upload themes which i downlaod from wordpress.org bcoz i have found that with wordpress.com u need to pay them to customize ur template which should be the best option , i am confused?? :fool:

1. Usually when someone talks about wordpress they are referring to the wordpress blogging software found at wordpress.org which you can download and install on your server, then enabling you to set up a blog.

2. The difference is wordpress.org is a website where you can download the software and get themes, plugins etc. wordpress.com is similar to blogspot, where your blog is hosted on wordpress.com and not on your domain, so it would look like myblog.wordpress.com for example.

3. Depends. If you already have a website and you want to style your blog to seamlessly fit in with your site you'd use the wordpress.org software. If you simply want a blog, where you don't want it to look exactly the same as your website, or you don't have any hosting etc. go with wordpress.com

4. Yes. if you install the wordpress blog software on your server you can upload themes. There are a lot of premium free wordpress themes out there, check out this site for example - http://designdisease.com/

Hope that clears it up for you. I've never set up a blog on wordpress.com so this is just my understanding of it. I've set up several blogs with the software from wordpress.org, and let me tell you it is fantastic.

thanx mate that was exactly i was looking for cheers :good:

If you have a design you would like your blog to have, you need to pay wordpress.com a fee to have the option as it's not in the core.

I always say to get a self hosted wordpress blog as you can customise it so much, unlike the .org alternative.

You can get decent UK hosting from £15, you could be paying more than that to customise your wordpress.org blog

Great question, alot of people, including myself at one-point had the same problem. I will basically just paste a section out of this really good book I read that breaks it down amazingly:

"Before we move any further I want to take the time to explain that there are two different options when creating a blog or website, and these can be easily mistaken if not explained.
1. WordPress.com
Firstly, we have ‘Wordpress.com.’ Wordpress.com is a commercial website that enables us to host a blog or website free of charge with the basic version. The platform your site will operate on is already fully constructed and has a completely updated security system. In summary, it is a basic, ‘systemized’ host server where you are required to sign-up and decide on a name for your blog. Since this is an already pre-designed option there is quite a lot of restriction that follows; however, you can upgrade to get more usability out of this selection. Of course, nothing comes free so be aware that upgrades will come at a very high price!
2. WordPress.org
Secondly, we have ‘WordPress.org.’ WordPress.org consists of software that you can use to build a fully-customizable website. The software can be downloaded for free. Afterwards, you can synchronize it with a domain and a hosting server, which you must purchase from a hosting company (this will be broken down further on, do not worry!). Then we get the freedom to completely modify it to our tastes.
I like to use a short metaphor to illustrate the benefits of each. For example, imagine you want to buy a new home. There are two routes you can take:
1. You buy a house that is already built
2. You buy land and build everything from the ground-up
Note: To understand the bigger picture, majority of the time it is cheaper to build your own home in comparison to buying a house that is already built, though it depends on where you live and the factors that go into purchasing properties.
There are always pros and cons with every choice and these have been laid out for you.
If you buy a home that is already-built you will benefit from..."
Sorry for the long message, but I hope that answers it. Also, if you are new to Wordpress, I would definitely recommend this book, it will teach all you need to start desigining amazing websites and blogs within a few hours. The title is 'Wordpress: simple Wordpress guide to create an attractive website or blog from scratch, step by step'. it is written by a dude named Felix.
here is a short link:
