What Would Make You A Better Designer

Featured Replies

After reading this article over at Smashing Magazine, I thought I'd create a thread asking people how they think they could become better at what they do.

Some people always bottle up their weak points, and never tell anybody. But by letting yourself go and admitting that you're not too good at something, maybe you'll improve and people will give you suggestions.

So in this thread:

  1. Post something that you're not very good at, and how you think you should improve at it.
  2. What are you particularly good at?
  3. How could other people improve (advice to others, optional)

  • Personally, I'm a little bit poor at doing anything creative. Though this is improving as I do more and more websites, and hopefully one day I'll be able to 'spread my wings', as it were, and create something amazing that most people love.
  • I feel as though one thing I'm good at is the code behind what I do, figuring out the problems and making sites cross-browser compatible.

I lack artistic talent probably improve this with some kind of mind implant.

I think I'm also quite good at problem solving in code although if i was better in the first place I wouldn't have problems to solve.

How long have you been designing for??

This is one thing that really bugs me and still does, but every time I design a site, I become that much better at what I do, so I think it's all about experience.

I've been playing around for about 4 or 5 years its tough finding time with full time job and other activities. I'm focusing more on development know it comes easier to me than the artistic side.

I havent really started yet so I havent got any parts of web design that I'm not good at. I'm fairly artistic and this is always held back by my ability.

Although, I do have the worry that I wont be able to do something, or get as good as some of the designers on here.

good idea, the only way to improve is to first identify what your weaknesses are!

I'd say that motivation is my biggest weakness... I can get distracted by Facebook/Flickr/Messenger/pub etc quite easily when really I should be working! That said though, I work tons better under lastminute pressure and it definitely brings out the best in me. When deadlines are more lax though, I become (much) more lax when I could be so much more productive with my time... bad I know!

My strength I'd say is that I'm always open to new things and am not scared about experimenting. I think that designing is personal and no 2 sites should look the same.

Tip for others: Try new things and think outside of the box when designing
