New Domain or New Page

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Im needing some advice regarding a photography website. Ive built a website for a photographer under his own name, almost a portfolio type website showing all styles of photography he does.

He now wants to market and focus on a specific part of his photography.

Do you think it would be best to have a specific name? a new domain name like "Portraits4U.com"?

Or do you think he could have a new page on his website for this area?

He ideally wants to be high up the search engines for the word portraits. I think thats why he wants a domain name. Do you think he could get the same ranking with just a page on his website, as opposed to a new domain name?

Thanks

Martin

It is a case of 'how long is a piece of string' to be honest - there is no right answer!

I would personally just have www.myname.com/portraits - because you will be linking into an existing site which is already on the search engines. As long as you have semantic code which is SEO friendly and highlights that it is a portfolio area of the site - when people type in Portrait Photography in My Area then his site should come up under the listing of: www.myname.com/portraits

And to help that - he could have a small banner on his site somewhere that says something like: Looking for specialist portrait photography? click here >

And links them through - that is just my personal opinion :)

And from a marketing point of view, if I wanted some portraits done I would always look for a photographer and not a corporate site like portraits4u.com or whatever :)

Thanks Terydinho, thats sounds like common sense.

I think he's stuck on the idea of a new name or sub heading.

Can you see any problems with having a new domain name & having it link through his menu.

Thanks

I can't see any problems with this at all MMcG - it would work in the same kind of way - but you would lose the search engine weighting of all the other copy from the main site

Thanks again.

Im still learning SEO. So you can target individual pages of the website. So if someone searches for "HDI Portraits", the search engine results would come up for a link to the "HDI Portrait" page of the website and not the main index.html.

Thanks.

If you opt out for keyword rich domain name then definitely it will help in search engine optimization but if you want to brand your domain name then you can opt any catchy name.

Thanks again.

If the SEO on the page is set up correctly, when people search for HDI Portraits, the sub folder will be the first page they are directed too.

A separate domain name is equally good, to be honest, both have pluses and minuses attached too them :)
