Hi all,

 

I toying with the idea of persuing a career as a Web editor/writer. Has anyone got any experience in this line of work?

 

What advice would give someone just starting out? I have a BSc in Multimedia Technology so I have some knowledge of HTML, CSS etc but no experience!

Conversley, I have plenty of experience of small to medium size websites, with no PHP.

 

I can create great looking templates, and have a few sites selling a few little product ranges.

 

However, I cant seem to make a good web design site, for myself. I dont want to get involved in going to see people, and bow to their every needs, and would much rather go it alone, and build e-shops for myself, as I am doing.

 

I am good at SEO, and make quite well performing sites, which work without having to pay for google ads.

 

Anway, if you can get some business, I could help you design some sites, until you get used to it (for a fee, naturally).

Thes are small -shops, which are made to turn over a lot of one certain type of goods.

 

There's no reason I could add calendars to the diary site, then computer diaries, then whatever else.

PHP frazzles my brain. No matter who explains it, it never seems to make sense because people keep expecting you to understand PHP terminollogy, when they explain, and you lose the thread.

 

But if you were willing to learn a bit about PHP, and how to get it working on a web page (given that you sound mor eintelligent than me), then htere's no reaosn we couldnt buidl some fantastic sites together, and then seperate, having helped each other tremendously.

 

If you do that, and learn PHP, I will help you build your sites, and give any advice I can.

 

I use CSS, but not to its full potential. I could study it a bit more, though, in a day or2, so you can safely say CSS is covered.

 

Im a designer, rather than coder, but I can also make graphics, logos and simple flash animations (like the dog above)

 

Some of my own sites may look sparse, but thats just part of the SEO. I can be more flash, if thats what people want, but if what they want is sales, they should do it my way.

Hi Rich,

 

I'm not 100% sure what you mean when you say "web editor/writer", do you mean someone that offers their services professionally to companies to write copy for their site and update the content for them? or do you mean you want to actually build websites for people and re-design existing sites?

 

If it's the former then you need good english skills and good understanding of SEO techniques and how a web page should be laid out, here's a link to an article detailing that; http://seoblog.rawfunk.com.au/basic-seo-tips

 

If it's the latter than in addition to HTML/CSS coding knowledge (which can be perfectly acceptable for brochure style websites) you're likely going to need how to write some server-side coding (PHP - here's a link to a site for beginners) as well as learning about Javascript and JQuery (or something similar) for interactive websites. You might also want to check out WordPress or some other content management system. WordPress is free for any type of use and there are plenty of tutorials online to help you create your own theme/designs for it. You can create great blog-style sites with it (we're actually in the process of building a new blog powered by it for our own website).
