We've got loads of promotional product dvd's that manufacturers are letting us put on our website.

 

I was going to do this via youtube, but I need to rip them from the dvd's to avi so I can upload them.

 

Can anyone recommend any software for this? I'm using XP, but also have access to a Mac if there's some better software for that.

If you need any conversions to mp4 or flash then Streamclip is excellent (and free)

VLC can do this (and export to pretty much every format, even some of the obscure container formats), i don't think theirs anything it can't do

Streamclip is tops...I've done a lot of DVD conversions using it...you do however need to buy the £15 MPEG 2 Encoder from Apple for it to work from .vob files (DVD format).

 

Also allows all sorts of stuff like cropping, in and out, picture and sound tweaks (many DVD's made on domestic recorders really push the sound levels), all sorts of options for bit rates, frames per second, frame size, key frames etc.

 

If you've not done much conversion for streaming before have a look on the Adovbe site for lot's on getting the best quality by tweaking frames per second, key frames etc based on original footage.

I have also just downloaded VLC player too because my windows media player wouldn't play dvd's. Didn't even know you could rip dvd's with this, I'll have a play about with that too.

I've only done one or two, it's not as fast as dedicated ripping software, but then again i didn't need it to be. I gave up on other software though, because i had two failed attempts where it ripped, but the video broke up in parts, but if i ripped on the slowest speed it was fine (which was slower than vlc?) so i've just stuck to vlc since, i rarely need to rip off dvd.

 

But yeah, i'd be suprised if theirs something you want to do with media that vlc cannot do. It really is one of the most capable pieces of software i have ever seen, although in later versions their does seem to be a few issues, particularly i've noticed with .mkv .m2ts and hi-def mp4 that i've come across, i've solved the first two, but cannot get hd mp4 playback to work, although it did work a few versions back.

Ok, so i've converted the dvd's to avi's and they're now ready to go on youtube at somestage, but my boss wants me to combine them into 1 movie to then burn back onto dvd! There's bout 5 videos that are bout 5 min each so would easy fit on a dvd, buts what the best software (preferably free) to do this.

 

Windows movie maker says I don't have the right codecs installed.

Maybe VLC can do it?

You can also try VirtualDub, which I've used before.

Just downloading divx so might be able to do it in movie maker.

I know it's possible with VirtualDub because I've used that in the past (not recently so can't give exact instructions), more recently I've worked with Premiere but I'm guessing you're looking for the free solution

 

If you struggle with codecs, it might be worth downloading the K-Lite Codec Pack

I installed divx and that let me play the videos in media player but still couldn't import. Will let you know if it works with these codecs.
