June 9, 200917 yr i dont know if im allowed to ask this but... just wanted to ask...if i wanted to start a little freelance web design thing from home.. what would i need to accomadate apart from informing the tax people... i dont need any licensing or anything do i?
June 9, 200917 yr You don't need to get any license, but some credentials are always good, usually in the form of a portfolio, experience is best.
June 9, 200917 yr Informing the tax people is the easy part. I started as a hobby and given time moved to freelancing. The hardest is not expecting it all to happen fast and being ready to give it time to develop i.e. getting clients, building your portfolio etc. If you are determined then in time it will all work out. June 9, 200917 yr I have just started the same thing, I am doing a few small sites for friends for free. Trying to build a portfolio, but i,m also learning about the contract side, time frames and learning what questions to ask potential clients. Lucky for me it's repeated all over this site. It seems to be the status quo on starting a business in this profession. Mehodge
June 10, 200917 yr In order: 1) Get a business bank account. Normally free for 12 months onwards. 2) Inform the HMRC that you are going self employed alongside a full-time job. Free setup, but you will pay tax at the end of the year. 3) Get a billing system for invoicing people (I recommend Canny Bill). Free but do have paid options 4) Get a contract template ready for use with clients. Free - see this post 5) You also need to consider having a portfolio site, so hosting for that should be taken into account. 6) Get business rolling in and bank the money.
