Mobile Website

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have to create a mobile website for my latest uni project for channel 4, and i know basically what to do, but i want is a few things...

i have no idea what pixel size to use

and also they need to be able to download/view a video, and with the wide range of phones out there, phones like the iphone can handle higher quality than older models, so is there anyway i can get the the site to recognise the sort of phone or should i just have 2 links, one saying low quality and the other saying high quality.

really i just need to know what pixel size i should design the site in :)

thanks for any responses :)

Having never designed a site specifically for mobile, I don't know the perfect pixel size but I do know of a good emulator. You can use this to see how your site will display on the average mobile device.

With regards to your video quality, I would provide a link to high and low as you suggested. This is the failsafe method as scripts to determine the model of phone etc could always fail. Plus you would have to biuld up a database of devices along with the quality of video they can view which could take days.

Regards,

Dan

I'm afraid I can't help you but just wanted to say thanks to Dan for sharing that link, great resource!

In uni we learnt about SVC (Scalable Video Coding) which basically encodes videos in layers.

A base layer which has the minimal quality, and then additional layers which increase the quality if there's enough bandwidth available. It sounds like what you need, but as far as I know it's not actually available yet.

I guess your method with 2 links is best for now.

I found this and this which are quite interesting articles on designing for mobiles, but neither specify a width that you should use.
