I think sometimes if you are interested in starting your own business, it is a good idea to start out by freelancing. You can do some jobs in addition to your "day job." This gives you the opportunity to see how well you like providing your services as a business. You also have time to get some samples for your portfolio or samples section of your website.

I think freelancing is really running a business. You are just running it under your own name rather than a "doing business as". My projects and bottom line have gotten better since I've started thinking in a business way rather than just in a "doing little things in my spare time" way.

I used to balance freelancing with a part-time job as a web designer but I gave up the part-time work in the end as it was too conflicting. It was nice to get the regular pay, but it meant that I wasn't dedicated to my freelancing and I also wasn't so dedicated to my job either.
