Workflow thread

Featured Replies

Hi, I want to start a thread where people give some insight into their workflow process.

1. I write a brief

2. I open a mindmapping program and visit similar websites noting their design attributes and what I like and dislike about the website

3. I come up with a research outcomes mindmap with what I've learnt from the previous step.

4. I make some layout ideas with thumbnails.

5. I open Photoshop and create a mock up

6. After I've honed the design I slice it up in Imageready and save it as HTML.

7. I convert the HTML to CSS

8. Voila, I've pretty much finished the design process.

For development

1. I visit the customer, try to get as much info as possible (Details) and write a brief

2. I write a design document, go back to the customer and go through it with them

3. I draw a site map

4. I write a list of pages, and what each page will do.

5. Set up the testing environment.

6. Start building. I use ASP.net forums a lot and general tutorials on the net.

7. Testing process with the client

8. Fix problems

9. Roll out final product

Any thoughts on above and please give details of your workflow process

Thanks

Andy

1: Consult with client about what they want - write a preliminary brief and quote

2: Try to get content from client, end up with a few ropey jpegs, and a 30 page word document for the homepage.

3: Somehow try and wrangle that into a website as follows:

- set up default environment (includes, DB's etc)

- create markup documents containing all content

- create separate stylesheets to cater for the following sections, in this order: type, layout, graphics (sometimes a separate sheet for tables/forms)

4: take snapshot of site and create graphics in Photoshop

5: Put site online, show client.

6: Explain whole concept of web fonts, fail. Try to avoid comic sans. Fail.

7: "Agree" on fonts. Disagree on logo.

8: Nearly there- day before release - phone client for green light - recieve request for a small feature they've heard about...CMS....cry.

9: 2 weeks later, CMS complete - can't get hold of client for next 2 months.

10: 2 months later - starving, no electricity, hair grey, recieve payment.

11: go to step 1

10: 2 months later - starving, no electricity, hair grey, recieve payment.

that's pretty lucky, still waiting on a project completion for a tiny site that was started and 95% finished like 15 months ago. I suppose that's a new clause i should be writing into the contracts though, to prevent clients dawdling :p Live and learn, live and learn.

That is classic!
