I'm currently putting together a band site which works like a social networking site. Bascially the users can set up a profile page for their bands but I'm not sure what the best language to use is.

 

The following is what I want the user to beable to do:-

 

-Be able to sign up, and customise their own pages with images, colours and even move boxes around.

-Upload images, songs, videos etc.

-Rate other bands and their songs.

-Become friends with other bands.

 

I've been learning HTML and CSS but don't know much about other languages.. I've had basic experience with PHP and think I could do all this with PHP/MySQL but should I be looking at something else?

PHP and MySQL would be perfect for this kind of thing. Start with your basic PHP skills and take it from there, learning as you go.

php and mysql is good, javascript might come in handy along the way for easier form validations and some extra good looking page animations (like facebook does) would be the icing on top of the cake.

Ensure any javascript form validation is backed up with server side validation as Javascript can always be disabled

There are some pre made javascript stuff out there for drag and drop movement i would not let people add there own javascript or php or any coding other than css and html and just use what you have pre added so that they cant run thing from there page that might harm the surfers computer..

 

I know much of how its done but i think its wise to start with this as you dont know much about php and javascript...

 

I have seen tutorials on youtube about people hacking php/mysql and using javascript to gain information.

 

Hope this helps .. sometimes its easyer to add stuff into a site first than having to go through and add it all later.
