I've been developing the web sites for more than twelve years now (since 1996). When I started it was difficult to find good hosting service so I always offered it together with web development. Now I run my own hosting on my dedicated server(s) but just for sites that we develop.

I was wondering how many other developers run their own servers (either VPS or dedicated).

I provide hosting (if wanted) for my clients too. We recently decided to offer hosting to non-clients too, as we have just invested in some new hardware. We run our company site off a dedicated system and run some other, private applications on that server. We have three other dedicated systems that are used for client hosting and now also regular hosting for anyone else.

Well, having our own hosting servers was exactly what we did not need at the time we started, but it helped us in many ways. One of them is that we have developed completely new technology for publishing dynamic contents (mostly databases) on-line and thanks to that we managed to survive some really hard years (if you remember the time dot com companies started falling and disappearing all over the world). Anyway, even now when we have enough people we still do not use PHP, ASP and other famous names (if client does not force us to use something of that

If I did not have my own servers, I probably would never think of developing my own hypertext pre-processor.
