PayPal - Custom passthrough variable with IPN

I am setting up a website to work with PayPal IPN (Instant Payment Notification) and want to use the "custom" passthrough variable...but the IPN doesn't seem to be sending it back. I am setting it in the HTML form...

 

For Example:

 

<input type="hidden" name="custom" value="1000000">

 

Anyone done this before with success?
