December 25, 200817 yr Sorry if I have posted in the wrong place. I'm not sure what the correct keywords are to use. (I have designed a site before, but am still a bit of a newbie). I am developing a new site which is currently still on my local server. I want to try out a website index/search facility whereby readers can search my site for content (it provides listings and information on service providers in my area). I don't think I want/need to to be able to search the web as a whole. I have looked at various options on the internet, but I seem to only find examples where you sign up and they host the searches for you. Ideally, I would want to host it myself, presumably using a script or something. But, for the moment, I want to be able to try something out on my local PC just to understand how these things work. Could you help with : 1. What is/are the correct term/s for a website index/search facility? This would help me look for programs "out there". 2. Is it possible to have a very simple search facility that plugs into HTML and calls a script, that could work on a local server? 3. What are examples of good search "whatever they are's". Many thanks for any tips - even a link to the correct terms/areas would be great. RJ

December 25, 200817 yr Author hello this is a free version http://www.freefind.com/ or if your data is in mysql i have a search script i can put it up for you Thanks for this info - it looks interesting, for when I host my site. However, at the moment, I am still looking for something I can use on my own PC and test, rather than something that is hosted on someone else's server. BTW - all the data I want indexed and searchable at the moment is just in html pages. I am still looking at the possibility of converting the data to database format. Thanks anyway.

December 26, 200817 yr Author hi ok when you decide to do this i will guide you through it Thanks - I'll take you up on it. In the meantime, it doesn't solve my problem. Surely there must be software somewhere that can be installed on my PC to index/search web pages? I'll have a look elsewhere and see what I can find. RJ
January 29, 200917 yr Author hello this is a free version http://www.freefind.com/ or if your data is in mysql i have a search script i can put it up for you Elite You generously said you would help me construct a script to provide local search facilities for a website I am developing. I was hoping that i could take you upon it! I have now setup a local server and have xampp running ok (Mepis Linux). I have set up a sample mysql database that contains fields for a local business directory ( business name, contact details, services offered, etc etc). I have entered some sample data using phpmyadmin. [ I have a sidebar menu that provides the main categories, but obviously i will need a facility for users to search the site.] Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks Richard BTW - I had a look at your site (I am interested because I used to keep tropical fish). However, the site does not appear to display correctly in Linux Firefox 3.0.3 I have taken a snapshot of how the display looks - if you want me to send it to you somewhere I will.
