December 24, 200817 yr Hi all, I have decided to take it upon my self to make a website for a business i am going to start-up. There is only one problem.... what do i call it?? The company i am going to start-up will design business stationary such as business cards, posters, flyers, websites and much more. If you have any ideas please feel free to suggest them to me as i will be happy for any. Mike Evans would be a good place to start. If you can make a good design around nothing but a name then it shows potential clients how creative you can be, even when working with limited information. It gives a certain air of professionalism too.

December 26, 200817 yr 'k, let's leave Tom out of it then I was having to do the same thing recently, as I'm starting up another company. I won't say what the name is, as I haven't registered it yet, but the name was giving me trouble as well until I started looking at it in design terms. I was designing a business name. So the first thing I did was to define for myself what it was that set me apart from the next guy. There's loads of design companies out there, what makes mine different? Once I'd got it clear in my head, I started looking at words and phrases that conjured up the type of imagery that I felt best portrayed the company. Starting with a few key words, I started poking around an online thesaurus. This is kinda similar to the sketch stage of designing, where you're basically just making notes of ideas and things to go through properly later, so don't start getting too critical - just get the ideas written down. I ened up with a few sheets of paper with lists of words, with quick margin notes on how they could potentially be used, so then I went and started crossing off the ones that were obviously not working well (maybe too generic, or the word had other connotations or whatever). The interesting part about the process for me was that I was expecting to then start combining appropriate words and phrases to come up with something I'd then use as a business name. What actually happened was that after so much reading about various words and meanings, I started thinking a little differently. The name that I ended up choosing actually hasn't got that much to do with my original definition of the company - it does relate to things that sets me apart, but a lot less literally than my first thoughts. I'm more than happy with it. Anyway, not saying that approach would work for you but it's worth a try if you're really stuck.
