How do I set up my own Private hosting for the WWW

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I'm looking to host my own server, that has a geo-cities feature with it so that people at local colleges can pay for a hosting space for one or two years, maybe three, and if they want to carry on using it after that they buy their own domain name and pay more for the hosting or i might keep it at that same price.

I know i can set it up on my a machine at my home, but its just I have no idea how to do it... i fund one guide on the internet but it seems a bit out dated and i've found a few more but they use WAMPP or something like that which i don't think is secure if i want to let other people use the hosting.

Would someone be able to point me in the direction of where i should look and if anyone knows how to help me it would be very appreciated!!

Many Thanks Ben

;)

you'd have to have iis7 as iis6 has limited users / tcp in on the free version, iis7 however has not got a server install yet (i don't think, aparently it comes out when vista server comes out). So your choices are vista std iis7 or linux, linux being preferable. either way it's going to be hard to setup and maintain high quality hosting without much know how.

I'd reccomend purchasing either dedicated hosting and creating user accounts or a reseller acount to resell onto you college friends. (probably a reseller acount would be more appropriate for you.) daily.co.uk are currently offering this service free for a year.

Thanks for the reply, I will have a look into them, and i would go with linux myself as i find it easier and more user friendly.

i got just under a year to get it all going so i got some time to learn the trick and tips :)

I'll look into daily.co.uk as well.

And i like a challenge! What life without a challenge.

Most ISPs will shut you down if you start trying to host from home - so first thing you need to do is check your ISP's ToS.

Personally, I'd say if you're determined to do it, go the reseller route as suggested above.

My parents are with Virgin Media, ill look into the ToS then, and ill look into reseller option,

thanks for the advice so far!

Keep em coming Ladies and Gentlemen

or buy a really good server from a good company an then you can just sell subdomains and addon domains to your friends.

you would however need to set up these subdomains and addon domains through the hosts cpanel unless a program can be made to do it for you automatically
