October 29, 200818 yr Hi all I'm currently revamping a school website which produces a weekly newsletter that it places up as a downloadable pdf on the website. My question is really should I also have a link that allows the pdf to be viewable in the browser (not keen on this as always seems to take forever!!) or should I consider something like flexbook. Do users in your experience appreciate this? Or is a downloadable pdf enough? Thanks in advance! Ysuran
October 29, 200818 yr I'd say keep the pdf files external from the website itself, loading times for websites should always be kept minimal, it's horrible to go on a website and it take ages to load, even more than waiting an external file to load, because that's what is expected to take the longest.
October 30, 200818 yr Author thanks traxor for the reply That was kind of what I was thinking but I'm trying to find ways of making the site interesting and this was just a thought! Would really like the content to be interesting and interactive for the user but being a school the info on the site comes from the teachers and it often feels like your trying to get blood from a stone as they don't see the importance of a website.
October 30, 200818 yr Hi there. I have taken the approach of making our school news letter a blog. I like this approach as it means the latest news letter is displayed at the top. There is also automatic archiving of the old newsletters. I have burned the blog with feedburner which has an option for people to subscribe to an email version of each newsletter and saves me the hassle of sending these emails myself. The best thing to this approach is that I have installed windows live writer on the secretaries computer so that now she simply types the post (weekly newsletter) in live writter and presses the publish button and wosh, it is up on the net. You can have a look at my newsletter here.

The thing is the school insist on having a news section and the newsletter as 2 separate sections: newsletter News At the moment the newsletter is created when the person responsible prints to a postcript printer - php then creates the pdf and jpeg for the page! I'm in the process of transporting the whole site to a database backend now that I'm comfortable with php and javascript\ajax and also making it validate to xhtml - the editor i was using was making bad html (tinyMCE) beta site But the subscription is a great idea and will incorporate it into the new site
