October 16, 200818 yr Ok, So it seems from my other post people think wordpress is the way to go for me to create my blog. I don't really want to use an existing template as I would rather be original and I have a few design ideas sketched out. Does anyone know of any good tutorials for creating wordpress themes from scratch? Equally speaking do people take existing theme code and alter it to their requirements instead of starting from beginning? I would be interested to know how people approach this.... Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance YES. Last months web designer magazine had a full step by step article on creating your own word press theme. The issue number is 149 and i guess it will still be on the shelves in some news agents. Also, im pretty sure you can order it direct from their website. webdesignermag dot co dot uk
October 16, 200818 yr Start from scratch. I find it hard to try and go through someone elses code, with all their little quirks. http://www.wpdesigner.com/2007/02/19/so-yo...ess-themes-huh/ http://nettuts.com/site-builds/how-to-crea...e-from-scratch/ http://css-tricks.com/designing-for-wordpr...ries-downloads/
November 27, 200817 yr I personally take the Wordpress classic or default theme and modify them to suit my specific requirements. My Step 1 is always to work outside of Wordpress to build a working static mockup using html and css with placeholders for the content. Step 2 is to modify the standard themes to match the mockup. Sometimes you'll find it easier to start with just Index.php (rather than all the other php templates for pages, archives, posts etc). Wordpress always uses index.php if it can't find any other template. This link is very useful to explain how the template hierarchy works: http://codex.wordpress.org/Image:Template_Hierarchy.png
