I know this probably seems like a really simple question but I cant work out how to create new gradients in illustrator I have searched on google but cant find anything. Anyone know how to do this?

I'll try....

 

Bring up gradients from window menu.

double click on the little colour tabs underneath (there are 2 black and white by default)

The double click on the fill box on the tools.

Select desired colours.

 

That's the way I do it. Don't know if it's the proper way

Ah yes that does work I tred that way earlyer but have just realise that the options was set to grey scale .

hello mate i went thru d same pblm n i found this tut just go thru it its really simple, the tut here is for applying gradient on text but it applies to the objects also....hope it solves ur prblm:).....
