  2. Thanks again...I will mess about with the CSS first and get the page looking how I want, and then I will have a look at that PHP script, and break it down by playing with it.

  5. Thanks again for such a quick reply! Does that whole section of code need to be entered or is it a "choose most useful method" exercise? Is there a site with all that broken down into idiot friendly chunks? Lol. The main page is wanted to change to the content selected by the navbar link while everything else stays the same, just the one pane out of 4 (header, navbar, main and footer) will change. Thanks, again!
  6. Welcome Paul, I'm new here too, here's to being new members in a superb community!
  7. Thanks for the quick replies guys. Our shop has a colour scheme of red and green, which seems to work for it, but I'm dubious about the contrasts, when I tried a green background box and red text it looked awful, whereas it looks acceptable on the menus? My idea is a company logo and shop name as a header/title, a navbar in a div floated left and a main panel floated right. The main panel will change to show the links chosen in the navbar. I know how to set up a border round the navbar and main page and how to fix a header and footer that clears the floats. My main problem at the moment is using the background-image in my css....I want a nicely graded light green to darker green background, that way the red title text will be on the lighter green, easier on the eyes, and the lower text can be a standard black. I tried to make an 800x600 photoshop jpeg, looked nice but I can't seem to get it to be the body's background image and put the navbar and main page over it. And I've no idea how the code to change the main page section will go, if it's even doable with HTML and CSS or if I may need some JavaScript.
  8. Glad I found this post, I had a similar question and there looks to be some invaluable information on here....thanks guys!!
  9. Hi all, my name is Alistair Brandson (hence the nickname "pickle"), and I'm 33 from the UK! I work in the catering industry but am looking to break into the IT field. I seem to get the job of maintaining the PC at work that is used for the online ordering system, this has recently gone from just keeping it running nicely to addressing problems and upgrades with the free Zencart that we use. Through some bodging and forum searching I seem to have coped so far but am looking for a deeper understanding of how it all works and eventually hope to redesign the site into something much more pleasing to the eye! I have started reading through Headfirst HTML and CSS and have been on CodeAcademy, completing the HTML and CSS Web Fundamentals course. I have a few ideas on making my own local site but am unsure where to start, so you all may find me posting on here very regularly. I'm hoping to be a royal pain in the butt, lol. Any tips on design fundamentals and progressing from basics to intermediate and any other cool, invaluable stuff I should know/pretend to know will be gratefully received. Thank you all in advance, Alistair
