  1. Problem with a plug-in when loading the homepage

Thanks nevertheless. It is a pity that nobody helped. I found the solution myself. For those like me who are still beginners and struggle with such beginners-problems, I will provide you with the solution I found. The original code was: <object id="media1" height="1" type="video/x-ms-wmv" width="1"> <param name="filename" value="sounds/Conga-TumbaoSon-Clave-2-3-Rhytm(mp3hamster.net).mp3" /> </object> This code caused that plug-in problem. Now I have changed the code with this one: <audio controls autoplay> <source src="sounds/backgroundsound.mp3" type="audio/mpeg"> Your browser does not support the audio element. </audio> It works perfect
  2. Hello everybody, Is is about the homepage of the website I am creating. www.stepbystepsalsa.co.uk On the homepage I add an audio file which is loaded right when the site is loaded. I have noticed that there is a problem with the plug-in, no matter whether you use firefox, or chrome. The plug-in crashes or stops but if you just wait then the site is loaded. I assume the problem lies on the the audio-file I added but there must be a way to solve this problem. It surely does not depend on the audio format. In fact, I am using a standard mp3 format. In addition, if you go to www.stepbystepsalsa.co.uk/instruments.html, you will find there more than an audio file. So why does this probelm concern only the homepage and how can I solve this problem? What do the experts say? Thx. Regards,

What do you mean with API?
  4. Facebook Like-Button

Thanks! I am still working on my website and I haven't really dealt with the facebook button at depth but I still do not undertand why is the <div id="fb-root"></div> needed. I believe you that it is needed. I was just wondering why. Anyway, thanks for the explanation. You are right, I can use the class "fb-like" for style elements. regards

Many thanks. You really see that I am still a beginner who needs to learn a lot of thing yet! First off, I did not know jsfiddle.net. It is very useful. As I used it and I saw that the code worked well, I suddenly realized that the reason why I did not see any button on the html site I tried to add the code was because, I still did not publish the content to my domain. A preview with on the browser does not show the facebook button. But why does for example an other similar function such as google-map which I was now thinking it works also only if you publish the content, DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK IN PREVIEW MODE TOO? Anyway, the initial problem was that I was working with HTML1.0 transitional. It was just automatic pre-adjusted like that from microsoft expression web 4. In fact I did not know nothing about it. I have a question about the code of the I like-facebook-button. What if I want to write the java script in an external java sheet? I mean, I assume I do not need the initial div: <div id="fb-root"></div> I can just add in a java sheet the following code withouth the tags <script></script>: (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_UK/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); and then add on those pages where I want the button to appear the followong div, which is just the second part of the code that facebook creates for you: <div id="whatever name i like in order to give some css properties to the div" class="fb-like" data-href="https://www.google.co.uk" data-layout="standard" data-action="like" data-show-faces="false" data-share="false"></div> Am I correct? If yes, just on the edgje of this posting, I was wondering why do I need the initial div: <div id="fb-root"></div> should I prefer to add the javascript code direct into the html code of every single pages on which I want the button to appear. As I mentioned in another posting of mine, I have just started dealing with javascript language, which I find really interesting, and as far I have understood, often you need such a <div> or <p> because than the fuction of the javascript relates to this in order to work properly. But in this javascript code here, I do not see any relation with the div : <div id="fb-root"></div>, that is why I am wondering why we need to add it into the html code. AS a beginner I hope to be allowed to ask question which might be silly for those who are experienced. I just want to learn. Thanks you all. Regards

Thanks. I am now working with HTML5 but the facebook-code does not work nevertheless. I have tried both to add the javascript right after the opening body-tag and in an external javascript sheet. It just doesn't work. I wonder why.
  7. Many thanks. But as I said, I have been dealing with Javascript and finally I found the solution myself. It was hard, because I did not know the first about Javascript but now slowly slowy is getting better.
  8. Well, I thought it's time to deal with Javascript programming language. It is really interesting. Of course it takes time but knowing how such things work is much better than using softwares which which write for you the html-css-javasript codes in the background. Eventually I think I will learn how to use the binary language in order to talk with the CPU directly in its mother tongue
  9. Dear Webdesigner-Community, I am still a beginner but I want to learn. I have been trying to create a website using microsoft expression web 4. Short time ago I did not know what was HTML or CSS but now slowly slowly I am learning. There are just many things which are interesting but at the same time they make you mad! I am trying to add some behavior to a picture of an html site. I would like that with the mouseover a song will be played but that it also stops with mouseout. Now, adding the behaviour to a pic to play a song using expression web is super easy. Even without knowing anything about Java scripts or html language. It is just a click on "add behaviour" it works but: 1) the song does not stop when you move the mouse out 2) the song stars again when you move it again over- that means that if you move the mouse 100 times over, in the background you will hear 100 times the song playing! I am trying to find out how to write an easy java script that help me solve this problem, but I am really struggeling. I foud some scripts in internet, which I pasted in my expression web, but either there were problems with the script or I even did not know how to embed the song, because often these smart guys who post the script take it for granted that even a beginner knows how to replace the "...mp3" with the right one. I do not even know how to tell Java the path of the song. What I would need is an easy script which works I really want to learn and am not lazy just looking for a quick answer but I have been trying to solve this probelm for 5 hours but invain! I would really appreciate it, if somebody could be so kind as to help me. Thanks

Hi, thanks for your answer. I can't make it out. It does not work. As I said the two errors I described in my above posting are still there. 1) all <script> tags must have type attribute 2) In XHtml1.0 Transitional the attribute 'data-href' is not permitted for the <div> tag By the way, as far as 'data-ref' istead of 'data-ref', I just mispelled it otherwise the code is correct. It contains a 'data-href", but the error appears nevertheless. You said, I should try to add <!DOCTYPE html> to the top of my html file. Well I did it though I supsected already that it wouldn't bring any change because in my html there is already the following: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> which is normally created automatically by the prog I am using (Microsoft Expression WEb 4) when I add a new empty html page to my project. I really do not understand why it does not work. When I click on preview, I do not see any button appearing in the browser. Just nothing. By the way, no wonder, if we consider that there are two errors in the code, according to what expression web 4 says.
  11. Good evening everybody! I wanted to embed the Facebook-I-like Button to my website. It is shold be a vey easy thing: 1) log in to facebook 2) create the code 3) add the code to the html code of the website 4) basta! I do not know why, but it does not work. The code is: <div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/it_IT/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));</script> which allegedly should be at best add right at the opening <body> tag. When I add it, I see an error in my html code. I am using microsoft expression web 4. the error says: all <script> tags must have type attribute There is a second part of the code which as far I have understood I can add there where I want the facebook-button to appear, which is the follow: <div class="fb-like" data-href="https://www.stepbystepsalsa.co.uk" data-layout="standard" data-action="like" data-show-faces="true" data-share="false"></div> Also here a new error appears, which is: In XHtml1.0 Transitional the attribute 'data-ref' is not permitted for the <div> tag Just to try it out I added both parts of the code after the opening <body> tag of a page. A part from the two errors described above, nothing happens. Where is the problem? What am I doing wrongly? I would be glad if someone coud help me with it. Regards.
  12. How to deal with overflow?

Ok sorry for all this stuff. I know that I am a beginner and my posting is not going to help any professional webdesigner, but maybe some other beginners though! So, I solved the last problem as well. The div, wich I called upperbodyabout had a fixed height of 800px. I changed the property to height 100%. It seems to work well now.
  13. How to deal with overflow?

update: I removed the property of overflow both from the body and the container. Instead of using a div for the text-content, I used a table. I finally got rid of the ugly double scroll bar and I can also scroll down till the end of the content and when I scroll back up the content from above does not disappear any longer BUT the container does not wrap the table! Uff! It makes me mad!
  14. Hi guys! I have been experiencing a new problem. It is about my site "about": www.stepbystepsalsa.co.uk./about.html I am trying to add a long text. I do not know what to do with the flow of the content. I added the property "overflow: hidden" to the body. You might ask "why?". Well, I am trying to find a solution and experimenting with different strategies. If the body has an oveflow set to "auto" or "visible", then the following new problems arise: 1) it appears a second scrollband, which I do not like 2) when I scroll down with the second scrollband and then back up the content from above disappers. It appers only later. Quite ugly effect! putting the body with hidden overflow I solved this problem, but not the all text is visible! I cannot scroll down till the end of the text. I tried to assig the div which contains the text a big heigth (1000px) but nothing has changed. The container has the following properties: min-height:100%; overflow:scroll; How can I solve this problem? There must be a solution? Please be so kind as to help me . Thanks
  15. EDIT: Was the solution: adding the property "overflow:auto" to the container?? But even though! I do not know why. In addition, this is the first time I have used this property. I haven't used the property "overflow" for the other domain : www.stepbystepsalsa.co.uk So , it is very strange. Why does the overflow property is needed in the domain www.morethanwords-london.co.uk but not in the other one? I am a beginnner and more or less I always use the same method. SO, I do not understand the importance of overflow, height, etc. BY the way, the result is still not satisfying because now the webiste has his own scroll band which is quite stupid to have eventually two scroll bands: the one of the website and the one of the browser.
