Responsive web design is the new black

We promised we would keep you up to date with the latest happenings in the field of web design. So we thought we’d start off our blog of with a nice little run down on Responsive Web Design also known as RWD.
Some of you may have heard of it before, but if you haven’t, you certainly will; as this is the future of web development as it stands right now. For the most part it looks like desktop is dead, or at least slowly but surely dying , as the demand for tablets and smart phones rise.
Recent analysis shows that currently 30% of web searches and browsing are done through mobile devices, such as smart phones or Tablet PC’s, a factor that is directly related to the need for RWD, as figures show that by next year this will jump to 50%.
Here at Verteez we have been at the forefront of responsive web design since it started to take root. Slowly but surely refineing our adaptive design process so that our web sites will look and function perfectly on any device.
In simple terms, responsive web design uses "media queries" to figure out the resolution of the device it's being served on. For Verteez, all this leads to a single conclusion: A million screens have bloomed all over the world, and we need to build for all of them.
Building apps might seem like the obvious solution. No one can doubt that having mobile applications for major platforms is better than having none at all, how can you build for every app store? Last month, for instance, Verteez was accessed on more than 2,500 different devices. We could certainly build apps to reach a good number of those platforms, but probably not for all of them.
More data suggests that the mobile web is the key. 60% of tablet users prefer reading news on the mobile web than via an app. While I think media companies should certainly offer apps, it's clear that having a great mobile website should be the priority.
The solution, of course, is to make a website that works equally well on every device. Welcome to responsive web design!
Flexible images and fluid grids then correctly size to fit the screen. If you're viewing this article on a desktop browser, for example, try making your browser window smaller. The images and content column will shrink, then the sidebar will disappear altogether. You’ll see the layout shrink from three columns, to two columns, to a singular column of content.
RWD also detects the type of device its being viewed on and changes the site's behavior accordingly. On touch devices, we enable swiping between columns.
The benefits are obvious: You build a website once, and it works seamlessly across thousands of different screens. Given the growing adoption of tablets and smartphones - and that users currently seem to prefer reading their news on the mobile web rather than in applications - We think it's inevitable that 2013 will be the year that responsive design really takes off.
We hope you have found this information informative and helpful .
