Graphic Design is definitely learned over time and unless you haven't had any lessons on typography and composition then it is generally harder to pick up.

^ This page will hopefully get you past any 'technical' difficulties, as most problems I had when starting out was 'how the hell do I do this, and this and this..' and not knowing the correct terms made it difficult for me to find out how to fix and/or how to do things the correct way.
 
I would start out slowly by looking at fonts on: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/ (which are fonts handpicked for designers!) and then start making fake prototypes for merchandise you like or bands you like. You can always start out small, by finding a gig poster you like and changing it, an album cover or even redesign a website - all these along with this forum and others will slowly help you develop the awareness and skills needed to better yourself.
 
It's all down to experience and putting the time aside.. But as long as your interested you'll slowly better yourself
