Just wondering whether people would advise learning code first or using design software like Dreamweaver?

Hi everyone! I hope you are all well! As the title suggests I am completely new to the world of web design (I have done a very basic Dreamweaver course through work but didn't feel I learnt anything as it was on DW Macromedia 4 and the software available to me to tinker with is CS5!!!) so I am basically starting from scratch. I was due to do more courses (also very basic) to get me started which have fallen through for the moment and I am looking for any suggestions of websites/ebooks, etc to look at (all preferably free for the moment!) to get some self tuition on the go. Any help/advice/pointers greatly appreciated!
