Feedback on HTML5 website please.
@Inspired Thanks for the info on landmark roles. Do these replace skip links or work in tandem with them? Got to be honest, the whole section/aside thing has me a bit baffled. Would <section id="mainContent"> and <section id="sideBar"> work semantically? Is <aside> only used for pull quotes etc? Cheers

Feedback on HTML5 website please.
@acorreidodiogo Thanks for your reply. I'll remove the link and replace (if I can get the darn edit button to work!). There is a link to the htm5shiv in a conditional comment just before the title tag. Is that what you mean? I'll give Processwire a look as well. Cheers

Feedback on HTML5 website please.
Hi, My first stab at a HTML5 layout. Any crits on colour scheme, layout, coding etc. would be appreciated. The site is still a work in progress. The home page image is a placeholder (waiting for client supplied photos/copy for various areas). www.almondsburyparishcouncil.co.uk/apcnew/index.php The client also requires basic CMS capabilities (text editing and PDF document uploads) with the option of adding features such as a forum and photo upload, at a later date. I've looked at Concrete 5, which seems to fit the bill. Any other CMS recommendations would be helpful. Many thanks.

Still cant quite understand CSS positioning
Hi, Try this....I'm not an expert, but hopefully it might work. HTML <div id="first"> <h1>Cambridge Images (Website)</h1> <p>This website was designed and developed by myself, for award-winning travel photographer Alan McArthur. Clean and simple is what he desired, clean and simple is what he was provided with and as a result his photography is able to shine as the main focus...</p> <div class="buttons"> <img src="images/next_button.png" alt="Next" class="nextButton" /> <img src="images/prev_button.png" alt="Previous" class="prevButton" /> </div> </div> CSS * { margin:0; padding:0; } /* zeroes all margins and padding (put at start of stylesheet) */ #first { background:black; width:500px;/* however wide you want the slide*/ height:300px; position:relative; } #first h1, p { font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color:#fff; } #first h1 { font-size:16px; padding:15px 0 0 15px; } #first p { font-size:12px; width:450px; padding:10px 0 0 15px; } .buttons { width:103px; height:50px; position:absolute; right:15px; top:240px; } .buttons img.nextButton, .buttons img.prevButton { width:50px; height:50px; float:left; } .buttons img.nextButton { margin-right:3px; } Cheers

HTML vs XHTML : Excuse me! Webie question 6?
Hi, <center> = text-align: center; <u> = text-decoration: underline; <font> = can be declared separately e.g. font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1em; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; line-height: 160%; or all together e.g. font: 1em/160% Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif italic bold; Font color is now declared separately as just color, e.g. color: #fff; I'm sure somebody will correct me if this is wrong. Cheers

ASP Contact Form Script
Hi, Sorry, this is becoming a bit of a saga. Still not working. Do I need to enable or install ASP.net on the host server or do I need to install an ASP.net application on my home computer and then upload. I haven't got an App_Code folder, Web.config file or anything like that on the hosting server. All I can see on the host webspace is the already uploaded HTML files. I just assumed you could upload the files to an ASP supported server and they would work (like PHP on a Linux server). Error message...... HTTP Error 404.8 - Not Found The request filtering module is configured to deny a path in the URL that contains a hiddenSegment section. Request filtering is configured for the Web server and it contains a hiddenSegments section that allows the server administrator to deny access to specific directories. Cheers

ASP Contact Form Script
Hi EagleFreelancer, Thank you so much for your help. Sorry for being a pain, but I'm still having no luck with this form. I would be grateful if you could tell me where I'm going wrong. I'm not sure what you meant when you said "SendEmail.vb goes to "App_Code" folder". I've edited SendEmail.vb with the hosts SMTP address (SmtpClient) and email login (Net.NetworkCredential) details. I've also edited Default.aspx.vb with the clients email address (sSendMessage) and subject text. Finally, I uploaded SendEmail.vb, Default.aspx.vb and Default.aspx to the host server and tried to access Default.aspx via the browser. The following error message occurred. HTTP Error 404.8 - Not Found The request filtering module is configured to deny a path in the URL that contains a hiddenSegment section. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

ASP Contact Form Script
Hi, The clients hosting package is with 123-Reg. It states on their support site that they support ASP (which I presume is Classic) and ASP.net Framework versions 2.0, 3.0 & 3.5. Cheers

ASP Contact Form Script
Hi, Any help with this would be great, as it's doing my head in! I need to create a form to email script for a website contact form, that works on a Windows based server. I assume this needs to be an ASP script. As I usually use PHP for this kind of thing, I haven't got a clue about ASP. Basically, I just need a script that sends the form contents to the clients email address after validating the entries. Ideally, it would show any validation errors on the same page as the form. If successful, it would then redirect to a "Thank you" page. I've tried customising various scripts that I've googled, but I'm totally clueless. Any help or links would be appreciated.

Hi Will, If you mean the overlay gallery thingy, it's called Lightbox 2 and it uses the Prototype Framework and Scriptaculous Effects Library (Javascript, I think). Lightbox2 Cheers

Creating Templates
Hi All, I need some advice on creating web page templates. Once I've coded a web page in Dreamweaver, I convert the page to a Template and then added Editable Regions, which I then use for creating subsequent pages. Although this works great, it bloats the code with template comments. I've heard of using PHP includes for permanent regions, such as header/navigation and the footer. Is using Dreamweaver templates OK or are PHP includes regarded as the more professional way to go? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for all your comments. It's given me plenty to think about. I'm going to keep the colour palette but have a go at re-designing the layout, just to jazz things up. Need some inspiration!

Portfolio site. Ready or not?
Hi All, I'm new to the forum and would be grateful for some feedback on my portfolio site. Basically, I'm looking to get my first step on the job ladder. So, I'm hoping to create a site that will stop any potential employer laughing his socks off, before he drop kicks me out the door. www.bluesilverdesign.co.uk As advised by Mr P, I've added focus styles to the contact form, hidden the 'Skip to content' anchor and added external links from the Lightbox gallery (to my other sites). Any other crits on the design/coding would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Yeah, looking through the job sites, it seems to be all Developer jobs at the moment. I know I need to bulk out my portfolio but what other things did you do to get the job. Was it just a case of knocking on doors? I was thinking of getting in contact with local designers and asking for some job experience. I do shift work, so I could fit it in on my days off.

Cheers Gibbs, Yeah, you're right. As soon as your back is turned, a new technology emerges which you've got to get your head around. I'm just going to concentrate on getting the basics right at the moment (clean, validating XHTML/CSS). I'm not sure what my prospects are in getting my first job. I'm only self-taught and you're up against college/university graduates in a depressed job market. Also, I'm the wrong side of forty, so it's going to be an uphill struggle. Time to start knocking on a few doors, methinks!

Hi Mr P, Thanks for your comments. I'll update the site with your recommendations. I might put a graphic on the right hand side, where the 'Skip to content' link is. Yet to decide. All the best.

Hi All, I'm an aspiring Web Designer, based in Bristol. Over the last two years, I've spent many a long night trying to get my head around the dark art of Web Design. I've worn my fingers to the bone learning to hand code XHTML/CSS, fiddled with the complexities of Photoshop and got a bit confused with Javascript. Anyway, I'm now at the point where I'm cautiously confident that I know what I'm doing (OK, perhaps not Javascript). It's time to get off my butt and start looking for that all important first step on the job ladder. To this end, I've recently created a portfolio site, which showcases my dubious talents. I would be grateful if you could let me know your criticisms. www.bluesilverdesign.co.uk Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Jon
