Nitin Reddy got a reaction from adamsmith in How many SQL connections is too many? You can never really tell how many queries is too many because you can have a web page that looks like the following:
* A banner image on top from an ad manager script
* The site title pulled from a CMS table
* The home page content obtained from a CMS table
* A sidebar newsfeed obtained from querying a table containing blog posts
* A footer containing links obtained from another CMS table
These are 5 queries right here so if you compare that to a static HTML page that has no database interaction at all, you are looking at two very different pages right there. You can also have a 'chat' page that makes a database query every 20 seconds so there could be over a hundred database queries being made by that page (though, ideally, one shouldn't built a chat application in this manner the world is less than perfect).
If you aren't experiencing any kind of a performance problem or foresee a performance problem in future, you probably don't need to bother about the number of queries or the number of connections because the effort you put into it may not really pay off... though if you can do it right, you should, as it would be a great learning experience.

Nitin Reddy got a reaction from JackDanielTracy in CSS WordpressYou are getting the line mid-way because the image you used it floated left. You can set a min-height attribute and mimic it with Javascript in IE. BTW, you have a good WordPress theme. Do you have it on the WordPress Theme Directory?

Nitin Reddy got a reaction from RobbieD90 in Quick XAMPP question.Hi!
You don't really need any of the files within the htdocs folder because all of them are probably the old applications that you developed so as long as you either have a copy of them or want to get rid of all of them, you can delete all of the contents of the htdocs folder. However, you might want to keep the xampp directory - it has the shortcuts to the phpinfo and phpmyadmin pages among other things... not that they are really necessary but I just keep them around.

Aargh. There really isn't any need to use a plugin to paginate - WP has a built-in function, paginate_links().

Nitin Reddy got a reaction from Gibson in Framework QuestionIf you have already written a custom content management system without using a framework and can provide all the functionality that you need, then you do not need to redo it using a framework because a framework adds extra baggage to your application and why fix something that isn't broken?
I have used CakePHP in the past and while it did have a good offering and plenty of documentation on the web, I switched to CodeIgniter simply because the idea of having to 'bake' a cake by setting environment variables for generating the classes did not appeal to me but then again some people think the idea of starting a Java application by having to type a command line statement to invoke the Java Virtual Machine is absurd and should be done by the operating system but I'm not complaining.
I have seen job postings for Kohana, Zend, Code Igniter, as well as CakePHP but, as you have mentioned, Zend and Code Igniter are the more popular of the lot.

Nitin Reddy got a reaction from OwenONeill in Wordpress Post's and Pages?Hi!
I just thought I'd mention that the text flows beyond the white background, although you've said that you are still working on the styling.
You can use different templates for pages and posts to get them to appear differently. Page templates let you pick a specific 'look' for specific pages, so that offers you much more control over what you can do.
If University Guide is the page where you display posts, you will typically get more than one post displayed there, though you can configure WordPress to display only one post. You cannot normally sort posts because they are listed by date but you can put in some custom code for it (every item in WordPress is a page/post and there's no bounds to what you can do with it when you add some custom code).
You can add images and description to a post by adding in custom fields - you can then alter the theme to display those from the post. BTW, if you display these on the side, where do the sponsored ads go?
