Stupid question, but does the background image exist in the location where you are calling it?

Essentially, you just need to add an extra field to the "Edit Post" page in the admin panel and suck that data out onto the page when it's viewed.

There is almost certainly a plugin for this, but I don't know it off the top of my head. You are better off asking on the Wordpress forum.

I second modX - lightweight and simple.

But like anything it depends on what you are trying to do
