The Internet Advertising Bureau have lots of articles and documentation on a whole range of on-line marketing.

 

Form experience of providing it as a service to my clients it can work really well if you have a good quality database to market to. Things to be carefull of are the obvious blacklisting issues from mass mailing potentially unwanted emails...
