Need icon / image advice please

Recommended Posts

I had a lot of icons on my site to represent each different article. I realize that the icons I had were old-fashioned and a few of them were not consistently designed in relation to each other.

I don't really want to go the stock image route, and I'd prefer to have icons or images that I make myself.

At the moment in an attempt to start again with the thought process, I've removed the icons and simply replaced them with a category colored dot instead for now, knowing that I can replace the dot with any image I consider in the future. (If I kept this concept, I'd then consider designing a small image for the 5 or so categories.)

The site is in my sig. So, to recap, I don't have a separate image for each post at the moment. Only an image for the category. (Which makes it easier to post a thread without needing an image for it.)

Anyway, could you give me your thoughts on which route to take, please and why? I'm after food for thought. And now I have a few days off work to enjoy all of this hobby nonsense. Much appreciated.

FYI your signature doesn't show up on the mobile site so you might want to share it in a post. If you want us mobile peasants to help, that is. 😀

My question is why do you really need icons (or dots)? The category of each article is already added next to the entry date.

Still on topic the only problem with coloured dots is that they are often hard to decipher if you have colour blindness, that affects about 10% of the population.

Thanks, Rich C. I didn't know that. The link is here. I just tried editing the first post, but maybe it's not possible or it's taking its time.

Thanks, BlueDreamer. I appreciate the blind population thing. (One of my best mates was blind. (He passed away.))

Thanks for noticing the category next to the date. It's nice to know these things are noticeable. I think I'm looking for visual stimulation for the viewer, instead of just lists of text.

(I'm also conflicted a little, because I realize I'm just using my own name as a site name, because it's just my blog/hobby, so that alone probably might turn some people off. Off topic I suppose.)

What about having something like the icons attached, you could use the same icon but in a different colour.

Hi GrahamUK33. Yes, Those are a pretty good choice and the kind of thing I am considering. They are small, rounded (a bit like my logo) and they are kind of cute or fun. I've actually purchased a couple of icon sets in the past, but never used them, because I imagined I might need a different icon for each and every post.

To concentrate on making posts and not needing an icon or artwork, other than its category icon (for visual stimulation?) is how I'm thinking about going ahead.

Thanks for your time, too.

ps. I'd only use the colored icon, not the white base and shadow - in case anyone thought I might.
