Developers - on going support

Recommended Posts

This is mainly aimed at freelance developers who work on large projects i.e. £8,000 and upwards, fairly complex systems.

Within your briefs what do you say in relation to ongoing support? This is purely out of interest of me being nosy :)

For myself I'm fairly strict. Within my brief I define what support actually is, what support is chargeable and free (I tend to occasionally do very minor things free for larger clients).

What about yourselves?

I believe in same way. I think it's our(developer's) responsibility to provide support for larger project mainly because client allowed us to work with trust. But minor changes and resolving quick glitches are few with support. If they ask to build a feature or another module which may take few days then we must charge additionally.

I'm not a freelancer but my last place placed 6 month warranties on projects so we would fix any bugs free of charge, however any new features or changes would be charged for. We did also offer a support package that would include x number of hours support per month. They could also be used to build new features. Many clients allowed their hours to build up and then use them for rebuilds / new features etc.
