I've read a bit of the history of html (http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/starthere/historyofhtml.html) and I wonder if there is any point in learning XHTML at all now that HTML5 is W3C's recommendation and the future of the web?

I would like to apologize for writing that post, I can find that information online. I guess I was just wondering if HTML5 has now completely replaced XHTML as the standard markup language, and if that is so, then is it worth studying XHTML. I am only a beginner, so be gentle with me

No. XHTML was the old standard before HTML5. Only look into it if you want a history lesson, nobody is using it in modern builds.

 

In your case just study everything for front-end on TreeHouse and CodeSchool. If they don't cover it don't learn it. Once you have done all that you will be more than good enough to get a junior job. It keeps the learning process simple and targeted if you exclusively use these resources, there's too much bad information out there to sift though. Once you have done what I suggest then you can expand your learning further with other resources.
