Hello all,

 

I'm a back-end developer currently working on my own project. Functionally my site works fine, however, although I have an idea of what my site looks like I cannot get it down on the viewport. My CSS3 and HTML5 are fine, however, like many server-side developers I have trouble with the look and feel of a site.

 

I've Googled every permutation of "examples of great looking website examples/tutorials" but the search engine brings up sites that either teach basics or pages I already know.

 

If anyone can post links to tutorials that either inspire or teach then please do or if anyone knows of any books that can help then please reply to this post.

I'd so a little bit of design theory if I were you, things like colour theory, typography, use of whitespace is a biggie. It can be challenging from just looking at other websites because you can think "yeah this looks fantastic" but can't quite nail down exactly why. Subtle animations for event also, if done right can add a touch of class. Imagery of course can add a huge amount to a webpage, if they fit the overall theme and message.

 

Some of the designers on here can probably expand on this into more detail Being a coder myself I've only really scratched the surface of design.
